Thankyou for the detailed response. You are correct on the amount of advancement created by the VTC sprocket - I am wrong on that detail. However, there are a few facts of the mod I have made that haven't been answered in your post which I would like to know what you think about them. Why is it that when all I did to the VTC was eliminate the axial slop, they stopped rattling? (The widening of the thrust face is inconsequential to the answer of this question because all that will do is provide a longer service life for the thrust bearing - the primary aspect of what I really did was just get rid of the large amount of axial slop and left just a few thousandths of running clearance, which is working just fine). Why it is that when using the OE internal return spring, my VTCs do not rattle. These are the two primary questions concerning the difference between what I have done and what you have done to resolve the problem. It is not my belief that the internal return spring needs to be changed at all. If that were the case, the two VTC sprockets on my engine that have ~180K miles on them, would suffer even worse from a limp spring. But all I did was sinch up the axial slop that was clearly created by wear on the rear thrust face and they no longer rattle. I increased the thrust face area to provide longer wear life, but that's just for longevity, not the actual "fix", as I see it. How much stiffer is your internal spring? I know you may not want to answer this so if you dont, that's understandable. But my concern with doing that is whether or not you are actually getting full advancement as it will require greater force to push the piston back against that stiffer spring, which may or may not be available depending on how stiff your new spring is.
